First American Woman to Walk in Space Reaches Deepest Spot in the Ocean
Do you have a one-up story? Like some experience you have in your back pocket that you can whip out when everyone else is talking about the cool shit they’ve done? Or maybe you’re a considerate person and this is just the story that you’ve found impresses people the most. Mine is about how I took care of the penguins at the New England Aquarium. Folks are incredulous when I tell them that was my job for a while. Astronauts naturally have the best one-ups – how could you top space? – they have no need for any other crazy experiences or stories.
Nobody told Kathy Sullivan.
Spoilers in the article title so that big lead up was devoid of suspense, but just for a second can I say damn, Kathy, first American woman to walk in space and now you hit up the deepest part of the Mariana “Hold My Beer, I Can Go Deeper” Trench too? Good for you, girl. That’s it, there’s no science lesson or anything this week. It’s just rad as hell that this badass woman exists and is being her badass self living her badass life. Oh, and she also was the director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and that might be most impressive of all. Probably easier to go to space than run a federal agency.
